Halloween witches' fingers, complete with green almond fingernails and black poppy seed hair!

  • 20 whole unpeeled almonds
  • 1 teaspoon green food colouring
  • 230g wholemeal plain flour
  • 120g caster sugar
  • 120g butter, softened
  • 20g finely ground almonds
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

  1. Place the almonds and the food colouring in a container or a jar with a tight-fitting lid and close it. Shake vigorously to coat the almonds and set to the side.
  2. Place flour, icing sugar, butter and ground almonds in the food processor and process to a crumbly consistency. Add the egg and process until the mix holds together in one piece. Shape a roll of 7 to 8cm diametre and wrap in cling film. Chill for 15 minutes.
  3. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Line a baking tray with baking parchment or with a silicone mat. You will also need a small sharp knife, a cutting board, a pastry brush and two small bowls, one for the egg white and one for the poppy seeds.
  4. Place the coloured almonds on a piece of kitchen roll and lightly cover with a second piece of kitchen roll without rubbing the almonds.
  5. Cut the pastry roll into 1 cm slices and shape each slice into a long finger. One end should be flat so it looks like the finger had been cut off, the other one looks like a fingertip.
  6. Lightly coat one side of the fingers with poppy seeds to make it look like dark hair. Place the fingers on the prepared baking tray about 2cm apart.
  7. Brush the almonds with egg white on one side and place them with the coated side down onto the pointy ends of the fingers. Bake until lightly coloured, about 15 minutes.
  8. Let the fingers cool before gently removing them from the baking tray.

Witches fingers – Halloween finger food

Halloween is my favorite spooky season to have fun with friends. Every year I have a Halloween party at my place, so I always have to come up with something spooky, funny and yummy.

I have been browsing Pinterest for last two weeks and I loved these Witches fingers design. My daugther was thrilled when she saw that, so we decided to make these. Usually this witches fingers are made either from pretzels sticks or sugar cookie dough. But I decided to experiment a bit and was wanting to have savory finger food, so I opted for pizza dough and added cheddar cheese inside the dough and it came out fantastic.

I am using pre-made pizza dough, which I had already frozen from previous batch, so it was fairly easy to make. And of course it cut down also on time. But you can get a pizza dough at any grocery store and if you are not so into pizza dough, you can substitute with puff pastry. Puff pastry is available at the frozen food section of your grocery store.

For the food coloring, you don’t necessarily need to use any. If you make your witch fingers with natural color of pizza dough, it will still look spooky. My daughter wanted to add many colors, so it came out sort of dirty witches fingers dough, but I liked that, it looked very realistic.

If you don’t feel like using cheese, no problem, these witches fingers are very savory and you can also dip them in salsa or cheese sauce if you’d like to. When you take them out of the oven, they are so crispy from outside and fluffy from inside, it’s just delicious. Little almond as a nail is not only very classic for witches fingers, but it’s quiet good as a little crisp of baked almond.

Technic of rolling is very simple. Some people will roll on the wooden board, I prefer to roll it in between the palms of my hands. Always using bit of flour, so the dough doesn’t stick on your hands.

TIP: Cut smaller pieces of dough, because even though it might seems small, it will puff in the oven. My first pieces of fingers were so big, that they looked like swollen witches fingers. They still tasted delicious, but as a look, it was weirdo puffy fingers. So I suggest rolling finger 4 inches long and 1/2 inch wide.

I have also made brownie cupcakes and I covered them in marshmallow spider net. For the brownie cupcake recipe go here and for the marshmallow spider net, take few marshmallows and place them in small microwave bowl. Microwave fro 30 seconds and let cool for a minute.

Then take the melted marshmallow in your hands (this is were it will become sticky) and try to tear them apart with your fingers and place them over the brownie cupcakes. Once you have the marshmallow in your hands, you will get it, how sticky it gets!


Peanut Butter Witches Fingers

Halloween is just a couple of days away and I’m getting so excited! I love this time of year and Halloween is just plain fun. I love serving fun food during the week leading up to Halloween. Today I made some delicious Peanut Butter Witches Fingers with a Creamy Peanut Butter Dip.

I’ve been using the New Peter Pan Simply Ground Peanut Butter all week, 2 jars so far and working on 3. Can you tell I like it? There’s a Honey Roast version also. I love the consistency of it, so “creamy with a BIT OF CRUNCH.” It is the perfect balance and no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Never stand there and wonder again, smooth or crunchy!


With a texture just like freshly ground peanut butter, Simply Ground Peanut Butter spreads evenly on bread without tearing it, unlike some creamy and crunchy peanut butters. You can see the texture above of the peanut butter right out of the jar. I love the wide mouth jar also, it’s perfect for dipping.

Making these cookies is so simple and only 5 Ingredients! Simply Ground Peanut Butter, butter, vanilla, confectioner’s sugar and flour. So easy. The texture of the peanut butter is perfect for these cookies!

Shaping the cookies is fun. Don’t be fussy about the shapes. Having each cookie look a little different makes it look like lots of fingers.

I also made the tassel garland you see in the back of the pictures. You can make a pretty good size garland rather quickly once you get the hang of it. I used tissue paper I found at Walmart when I was buying the Simply Ground Peanut Butter. They had a great variety of colors too!

I have a tool that cuts the tassels for me but a pair of scissors will work. To prepare the tissue for cutting, take 1 sheet of paper and fold it in half lengthwise. Then fold it in half again from the opposite side. Cut into 2 equal pieces. Cut 1/2 inch cuts up to within 1 inch of the folded top edge. Run a piece of wire thru the top and I crinkled and wrapped the garland around at the top. Twist the wire together to keep it closed at the top.


HOW TO MAKE WITCHES FINGERS

Preheat the oven to 325*F. Line several large baking sheets with baking paper. Set aside.

Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl. Beat in the egg, salt, and extracts. Stir in the flour just to combine.

Shape tablespoonfuls of the dough into finger shapes, about 2 inches in length, and creating a bit of a knobbly knuckle about 1/3 of the way down. Place onto the baking sheets.

Press one almond firmly into the upper third end of each “finger” to resemble a fingernail. Using a sharp knife, gently score some slashes over the knuckle to make wrinkles.

Bake in the heated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, until golden and crisp. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for several minutes.

Carefully remove the “fingernails” and apply some icing onto the nail bed, then put the fingernail back in place. Place onto wire racks to cool completely and allow the icing to set.

These cookies will spread a bit while baking, so make sure you shape them quite thin when you are shaping them, much thinner than you want them to end up. Mine was not quite thin enough and ended up a bit pudgy looking, but some witches are fat and pudgy, right? It’s from all of those children they gobble up!

These are really cute and spooky looking. You can serve them with warmed red strawberry or raspberry jam for dipping them in, or even cups of red tinted hot chocolate.

For a really creepy looking finger you can also add green gel food colouring to the dough. This would really make them look like the Wicked Witch of the West’s fingers!

Skinny or fat, plain or green, one thing is for sure these spooky witches’ fingers are going to delight everyone in your home and may even become a yearly tradition for you. At a time like this, during the Coronavirus pandemic, when there is not a lot to look forward to in the terms of celebrations, it is the little things like this that will bring our families the most joy and happiness.

Kids and grand kids will love making these. My children and their friends have enjoyed competing with each other when making them, to see who can make the most realistic witch finger. They tell me that the pretzel is the witch’s bone in her finger.

The funny thing is, I just had a little surgery on my thumb today and I guess we take things for granted. I never realized how many things I use my thumb for. Happy Haunting!


Combine butter and marshmallows in large microwave safe bowl

Microwave for 30 second intervals until…

…the marshmallows are puffed and squishy (took me about 1 min. and 30 seconds.)

Spray spatula with non-stick spray

Stir until smooth and gooey

Add food coloring a little at a time until you’re happy with the color

Think this could pass for a salad?

Spray a 1/4 cup measuring cup…

…and your hands (you’ll need to reapply often)

Roll like you did with Play Dough when you were 4! YAY!

Press-on-nail (It will seem loose at first but will stick better as it firms up)

Arrange on a tray lined with wax or parchment paper and allow to firm up

Snip the bottom of spider rings so they’ll fit around the plump fingers


Cheddar Witches’ Fingers (Spooky Cheese Straws)

I first posted this recipe way back in 2008. Since I like to think my writing and photography have gotten better since then, I thought these deserved a repost. I’ve seen several recipes floating around for sweet witch fingers, but I’m always in need of more savory treats, which is one reason I especially love these. If you’re looking for a quick and tasty Halloween treat, then you definitely need to make these cheddar witches’ fingers!

Halloween, as I’ve mentioned, is one of my favorite holidays. I would make Halloween treats all month if I could, but there’s no way Eric and I could eat all those goodies. I couldn’t let Halloween pass without making these, though, because they’re so much fun to make. Plus, they taste absolutely delicious and add spooky flair to any party. The extra sharp cheddar makes them intensely cheesy, and they bake up nice and crispy. The coarse salt adds a nice crunch on top. Since I like my cheese straws a little spicy, I’ve adapted the recipe to include cayenne pepper. If you don’t want the heat, simply leave it out. They’ll still taste fabulous without it. I also adapted the recipe to include wetting the dough before pressing the almonds on because many of them fell off after baking without this step. I painted the almonds to give them a spookier appearance, and I love the way the black nails look against the orange fingers.

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup confectioner’s sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 2/3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
¾ cup almonds, whole, blanched
1 tube red decorator’s gel

1. In a bowl, beat together butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla.

2. Beat in flour, baking soda and salt.

3. Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes.

4. Work with one quarter of the dough at a time, keep the rest refrigerated.

5. Roll one teaspoon of dough into a finger shape.

6. Press almond on the end of each cookie for a fingernail.

7. Squeeze in center to form knuckle shape.

8. Using a paring knife, make slashes in several places to form knuckle.

9. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet.

10. Bake at 325 degrees for 20-25 minutes, until pale golden.

11. Let cool for three minutes.

12. Lift up almond and squeeze red decorators gel onto nail bed. Press almond back in place so gel oozes out. You can also make slashes on fingers and fill them with “blood.”


Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Heat the ghee and garlic in a small skillet over low heat and keep on low while you make the bread sticks.

Combine the almond flour, egg, olive oil, honey, rosemary, salt, garlic salt, and baking soda in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the beater attachment, or use an electric handheld beater. Mix on medium speed until a ball of dough forms. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Using your fingertips, roll each piece of dough out into a finger shape, about 4 inches long. If the dough begins to crack, wet your fingertips slightly and continue rolling. Use your fingers to create knotted knuckles and a knife to make light creases in the dough. Press the almonds halfway down at the ends of the bread sticks to create fingernails. Place the bread sticks on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart. Brush with the garlic-infused ghee.

Bake for twelve minutes, turning over halfway through. Cool on a wire rack for fifteen minutes, and serve warm with hot marinara sauce for dipping.


Finishing Your Witch Fingers

After the candy coating is dry, take a toothpick and gently drag it across the green candy coating for a realistic crease in the finger. Try to do creases closer to the fingernail, and again in the middle.

This doesn’t have to be exact but the creases will add to the realistic look of fingers!

The kids can definitely help with this part, too. Allow to dry completely after the Witch Fingers are done!

Serve in a jar or Halloween serving dish to hide the pretzel halves, or just on a Halloween serving dish with your other goodies!
